Frequently Ask Questions
1. General
Q. Whence comes the name Simms?
A. The creek is named for Hubert and Lottie Simms who ran a farm near the
mouth of the creek starting about 1920. Their house was located
roughly at the shore end of the current Simms Road. The archive
of the Museum at Campbell River has a picture of the couple in front of
their house.
Q. Which salmon species spawn in Simms Creek?
A. The
salmon species Coho, Chinook, Pink, Chum, and the trout species
Cutthroat have all spawned in Simms Creek. The Coho are the most
consistent returning adult salmon. The counts of adult Coho at
the fish fence typically have been from one hundred to three
hundred. However, they only numbered in single digits in 2005 and
2006, when all Coho runs in area streams were shockingly low.
Cutthroat trout are seen each year, but the numbers have never been
accurately determined. The Chinook, Pink and Chum salmon have not
yet called Simms Creek home in consistent numbers or in consecutive
years.
